Diwali 2026

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November this year — and in 2026 the tithis leave a gap day, so Annakut lands on Tuesday the 10th rather than the next morning.

The days, this year

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, and Govardhan Puja / Annakut on Tuesday 10 November — the peak of Kartik, Braj’s loveliest month. Braj does not observe Diwali the way north Indian cities do. There are fireworks and there is shopping, but the centre of it here is lamps: deepdan on the Yamuna, Damodara offerings in every temple courtyard, and the whole month’s nightly ritual arriving at full volume for one night.

The 2026 quirk — a gap day

Most years, Annakut is the morning after Diwali. In 2026 it is not. The tithis leave Monday 9 November free, which changes the shape of the trip:

  • Sunday 8th — Diwali itself, on a weekend, at maximum crowd.
  • Monday 9th — the calm day. This is the one to spend on the Govardhan parikrama if you want the 21 km circuit walkable rather than as a human river.
  • Tuesday 10thGovardhan Puja and Annakut: food mountains in every temple, and the parikrama path at its fullest of the whole year.

Getting this backwards is the single most common way to miss what you came for. Plan around the 10th, not the 9th.

Where to be on the night

  • Keshi Ghat and the Yamuna ghats, Vrindavan — lamps on the river, which is the image most people are actually chasing.
  • Prem Mandir and ISKCON — the big illuminations, and the easiest entry point if the ritual is unfamiliar; instructions in English.
  • Radha Raman and the old Goswami temples — small, exact, and far more beautiful than scale. Go here if the crowds have worn you down.
  • Vishram Ghat, Mathura — the river at its most ceremonial, and a different city’s version of the same night.

Planning honestly

The 7–11 November window is the most expensive and most crowded of Kartik — a Sunday Diwali guarantees it. Book rooms for those nights well ahead (accommodation), expect roads around Govardhan to lock up on the 10th, and treat the crowd rules as they are written rather than as advice.

And the honest alternative: the rest of Kartik is quieter, cheaper, and in many ways lovelier. The lamps are lit every evening of the month, not only this one. If Diwali night itself is not the specific thing you want, the full Kartik 2026 page lays out the calmer weeks.

Dates checked, but check again. Braj festival days follow the lunar calendar (how that works), and temple committees fine-tune schedules close to the day. We correct this page as announcements land — the letters carry the updates.

Questions

Asked often.

When is Diwali in Braj in 2026?
Sunday 8 November 2026. Govardhan Puja and Annakut follow on Tuesday 10 November — two days later rather than the next morning, because the tithis leave a gap day this year.
Why is Govardhan Puja two days after Diwali in 2026?
The festivals follow lunar tithis, not fixed intervals, and in 2026 the sequence leaves a clear day between them. That matters for planning — if Annakut and the Govardhan parikrama are your reason for coming, the day to be there is Tuesday the 10th, not Monday the 9th.
Where is the best place to be for Diwali in Vrindavan?
The Yamuna ghats for lamps floated on the river, Keshi Ghat above all; the big modern temples for sheer illumination; and the old Goswami temples for the quieter, more refined evening. Mathura's Vishram Ghat is the alternative if you want the river at its most ceremonial.
Is Diwali a good time to visit Braj?
It is the peak of Kartik, which is Braj's best sustained season — but the 7–11 November window is the most crowded and expensive of the month. If you want lamp-lit Braj without the crush, come any other week of Kartik; the nightly lamp offerings run all month.
How far ahead should I book for Diwali 2026?
Now. Diwali falling on a Sunday pulls in a full weekend of day-trippers on top of the usual festival demand, and Vrindavan's rooms for 7–11 November go early. Book that window first and leave the rest of the month flexible.
