The day, this year
Radhashtami 2026 falls on Saturday 19 September — and the Saturday matters. Barsana’s hill fills with day-trippers on any Radhashtami; on a weekend it fills earlier and thicker. The dawn abhisheka of Radha Rani at the Shriji temple, the chhappan bhog of 56 dishes, the one day tradition says her feet may be glimpsed — all of it happens in the morning, which is exactly why your day has to start in the dark. Planning the Saturday
- Leave Vrindavan by 5 am or stay the night before in or near Barsana — its few rooms go first, so look early (see accommodation).
- Roads jam solid by mid-morning on the Barsana approaches; from about 9 am, walking the last stretch is normal. Treat the return as slow too.
- The hill lanes are narrow and the flow dense — the crowd rules matter most on the temple steps.
- Weather is monsoon’s tail: humid and warm. The climb asks for water and light clothes.
- Pair it well: Nandgaon the following morning is the classic combination — Radha’s town at full volume, then Krishna’s foster home in Sunday quiet.
If you missed Janmashtami
This is the consolation that needs no consoling: Braj a fortnight after Krishna’s birthday is still fully in festival season, rooms are findable, and Barsana on this day is the most beautiful festival stage in the region. The next big window after this is Kartik month in October–November.
